It is not the cold on its own. Plenty of colder places break fewer pipes, because they stay cold. Colorado's problem is the swing.
Denver's overnight lows drop below freezing on roughly 150 days in an average year, and the daytime high climbs back above it on most of them. That is a freeze-thaw cycle nearly every winter day. Water expands about nine percent when it freezes, and in a closed pipe that expansion has nowhere to go, so pressure builds between the ice plug and the closed faucet until the weakest point in the line gives way.
The split usually happens during the freeze and stays sealed by ice. The flood happens hours later on the thaw, often mid-morning while the house is empty and the sun has come around to the south wall. That lag is why so many burst-pipe calls are made when someone comes home to several inches of water rather than when the pipe actually failed.
Two local factors make it worse. Front Range municipal water is moderately hard, and years of scale deposits inside supply lines and water heaters create weak points and restrict flow. And a large share of metro homes have finished basements directly under the plumbing, so the water lands on drywall, carpet pad and particleboard rather than on a concrete slab.

Burst supply lines produce Category 1 clean water, which is the best case: material can often be dried in place rather than removed. That advantage disappears fast. Clean water sitting for 48 hours or more degrades toward Category 2, and mold germinates in damp drywall paper and carpet pad within 24 to 48 hours.
The work sequence is extraction, then structural drying with daily moisture readings, then rebuild of whatever had to come out. If the line ran above a ceiling, it is usually a Class 3 job — overhead saturation means walls, ceiling, insulation and subfloor are all wet, and wet blown-in insulation is removed rather than dried.
Disconnect garden hoses before the first hard freeze and shut off the interior valve feeding each hose bib. Insulate supply lines in crawlspaces, garages and exterior walls. Keep the thermostat at 55°F or higher when you travel, and open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm room air reaches the plumbing. In a sustained cold snap, let a pencil-thin trickle run from the faucet on the most exposed line.

Open the faucet it feeds so pressure has somewhere to go, then warm the section gradually with a hair dryer or space heater working from the faucet back toward the freeze. Never use an open flame. If you cannot locate the frozen section, or if the pipe is inside a wall, shut off the main and call a plumber.
Sudden and accidental pipe failure is typically covered by a standard homeowners policy, and the resulting water damage usually is too. The pipe repair itself may or may not be. Coverage can be challenged if the insurer believes the home was left unheated, so keep the thermostat up when you travel in winter.
The water damage side typically runs $1,000 to $4,000, plus $150 to $2,000 for the plumbing repair itself. If the line ran above a finished basement ceiling and saturated insulation and subfloor, expect the upper end or beyond.
